It’s funny how things turn out. Just when you think you’re finally on the right path, you are once again confronted by a fork on the road, and you have to make the choice to go one way, or the other.

I was happy writing freelance. I was happy running my very own online business. I was happy working on my little Acer laptop seated in front of my equally little yellow desk in our little second bedroom. And yet, here I am right now in an unfamiliar office, blogging on the sly because it’s my first day at this new, oh-so “real” job and everyone’s left me alone to learn the rudiments of my rather ambiguous job description. For the nth time since I was unceremoniously hired by three different people from the company, fired by one, and hired once again in a span of a week (very long story), I am wondering – yet again – if I did the right thing by rejoining the pod and taking on another nine-to-sixer.

So why am I here, despite my plethora of doubts? That is another long story (and I seriously doubt if I could get away with discussing it at length here), but in a nutshell, the world is in recession. I used to get paid above average rates, but now I’m deemed too expensive, especially when desperate Americans are now willing to work for peanuts. I did try to price my services lower, but for stingy clients, it’s unfortunately not enough. So since November, projects became fewer and farther between, and if it wasn’t for my most loyal clients, I wouldn’t have been able to keep afloat.

Also, since we moved to the Philippines, The Fiance’s income has taken a rather considerable dip. It took him quite awhile to find a job, and when he did, it was only just a few hours per week for starters. So even if his hourly rate was pretty good, it still wasn’t enough. Because of that, we relied mostly on my income for a while, and when that started dipping as well, we ended up spending most of our savings. And so it was that we had our own personal recession.

Thankfully, business started picking up a little by mid-January, and The Fiance’s working hours have since tripled. But although we have quite enough to get by, we both decided that we can’t risk going through those harrowing months again. Not only that, we also needed to recoup our depleted savings.

Then this job came up (incidentally, it’s for the same company The Fiance works for), and we both decided that I should go for it. The pay is pretty good, considering that my tasks aren’t really that demanding, and I get benefits, which is important because I get sick every so often. Plus, it’s also a day job (I honestly would’ve died if I had to work nights again like I did for four years), and it gives me enough time to continue running my business if I can just learn to delegate, as well as write for my existing clients.

So after months of almost living hand to mouth (okay, that’s a bit harsh, but that’s what it felt like), we’re hoping to finally regain the lifestyle we gave up for a while, travel some more, replenish our savings, pursue our long-term plans, and maybe get a term life insurance quote, just in case. I still have my doubts about working, yes, but for this sort of security, I think I can live with that.

Ok – that makes a lot more sense now… I like that, your own personal recession. I’m always on the brink of that one as well. Living job to job is a tough life… I’ve really got to focus more on the next job before the necessity arises.

Would you b/f say it’s easier to get a decent job in TH or RP? I’d guess TH, but not sure… as I’ve not visited PI.

I hope you blog here a lot – your writing is always a great read. I read a total of about 9 blogs now, of which yours is one. There are some horrible writers out there… you should be doing something in the field – you didn’t mention what it is you’re doing – but I hope it has something to do with writing or learning some skill/s that can help you with writing or producing some product… blog, podcast, video cast, pdf book, etc.

    Take care and good luck!

@Vern: My friend and I started a writing service, and we’ve been ghostwriting for half the western hemisphere. We’ve ghostwritten blogs, ezine articles, e-books – you name it, we’ve dunnit! All good fun. It’s just too bad that the whole freelancing thing is much too volatile at the moment. Still, I haven’t given it up or anything; I just added to it. :-D

Jobs for foreigners are easier to come by in Thailand, probably because the people there spend most of their time chasing their own tails. Here, almost everyone speaks English and are fairly well-educated and skilled. There aren’t a lot of opportunities for foreigners because Pinoys can often do the job better and cheaper. Still, jobs are available for those who seek. ;-)

Oh, and thanks for still reading my blog! I don’t know if anyone else does these days. LOL.

well, i do read your posts miss iris, albeit not always commenting on each and every post that you churn out. along with miss chin (who, by the way, i’m missing a lot as well because she has not been as visible as before in her thenevergirl.com), your blog is quite a great read i always look forward to perusing.

i want to be a freelance writer as well. but i don’t know how and where to start so i’m sticking with my call-whoring job, as toxic as it is at the moment. and yes, i don’t know if the pay’s worth the risk as well so i’m not taking the plunge yet. yet being the operative word. plus, of course, i have this backlog of finally reviewing for the CPA board exams. so many dreams to chase i guess.

it’s a good thing to hear you’re managing the recession crunch a little well miss iris. gawd knows everyone’s feeling the beating right now.

goodluck and keep writing miss iris. looking forward to more engaging reads from you. :D

@Lio: Why, thank you, Lio. The visits are much appreciated. :-D

Hey, if you ever need a writing gig, let me or Chin know. We’re always on the lookout for good writers. You might find yourself climbing the walls after the nth article on Germany, but it’s good extra income. And yes, I do think you’re a fab writer. ;-)

    hi goddess, :D

i am a freelance writer too. haha. i have been home-based and very freelance since last year. i had to give the office life up because of domestic obligations and the fact that i am making Ceres Liner filthy rich (i used to travel for a total of 4 hrs a day to get to work).

i don’t know until when i’m going to stay this way though. grrrr. for now, the keywords must be my vice. and like lio, i adore chin and you!

@Tinay: Hey, if I could go back to staying home and writing, I would. There’s nothing like writing in one’s skivvies that gets the words flowing. I miss the life, so enjoy it! ;-)

Oh, and thanks for being part of my meager readership. I’ll be spending the day sneakily reading your blog. :-D
